Kim Sung-hwan, CEO of the 21st century, an ultra-precision laser processing expert, was selected as the “functional Korean of the month.” It has been recognized for its technological improvement by investing 15% of its annual sales in R&D. CEO Kim expressed his ambition to become a leader in ultra-precision laser processing technology by introducing artificial intelligence (AI) in all processing processes.
The Ministry of Employment and Labor and the Korea Industrial Manpower Corporation announced on the 13th that they invited engineers selected as “functional Koreans of the month” from October to December this year to the Sejong Government Complex to award certificates of the Minister of Employment and Labor. Kim Sung-hwan, CEO of the 21st Century, was selected as the “functional Korean of the Month” in November and participated in the awards ceremony with the winners in October and December, Watchcam CEO Choi Ji-hoon, and SJ Bbang CEO Choi In-ho.
CEO Kim is a skilled technician with ultra-precision laser processing technology and is an expert in developing tools necessary for automobiles, electricity, and electronic production lines. After graduating from vocational high school, CEO Kim joined a small and medium-sized company that designs and develops special tools such as drills and learned design and development from the president, a tool design expert, and developed 400 to 500 tools for auto parts production lines.
이후 창업해 자동차 분야에서 전기와 전자 분야로 넓혀 공구를 만들던 김 대표는 ‘눈에 보이지도 않는 초미세 구멍을 뚫어줄 수 있냐’라는 의뢰를 받고 레이저장비를 활용해 국내에서는 불가능으로 여겼던 가공기술을 개발했다. 이후 초정밀 레이저 가공기술을 지속적으로 업그레이드했다.
김 대표는 2019년 ELID(Electrolytic In-process Dressing) 연삭 가공기술에 펨토초(1000조 분의 1초) 레이저 가공기술을 접목해 세계 최초로 초정밀 절단용 블레이드를 개발했다. ELID 연삭은 미세한 입자의 다이아몬드 휠(숫돌)을 전기전해공법으로 연속 드레싱 작업을 수행하는 연삭기술로, 초경합금 블레이드를 나노미터 단위로 가공한다.
김 대표가 개발한 블레이드는 LCD패널과 OLED 마이크로 필름, MLCC(적층 세라믹 콘덴서), 2차 전지 박막 컷팅 등 초소형 및 난삭재 전자부품 생산에 활용되며, 삼성전기, 삼성전자, 삼성LED, 현대케피코 등 국내 대기업과 도시바, 온세미콘, 마이크론, 히타치 등 다국적기업에 수출하고 있다.
김 대표는 “해마다 매출의 15%를 연구개발에 투자해 기술력을 향상시킨 결과, 기능한국인의 영예를 안게 됐다”며 “앞으로 전 가공 공정에 인공지능(AI)을 도입해 초정밀 레이저 가공기술 분야의 선두기업으로 자리매김 해나가겠다”고 밝혔다.
고용노동부와 한국산업인력공단은 ‘이달의 기능한국인’은 기술인의 자긍심을 높이고 숙련기술인이 인정받는 사회를 만들기 위해 2006년 8월부터 매월 한 명씩 선정하고 있다. 직업계 학교 등을 졸업하고 산업 현장에서 10년 이상 경력이 있는 사람 가운데 사회적으로 성공한 숙련기술인이 대상이다.
